What’s the day-to-day job like?

As a senior manager, you will lead on developing the purpose, direction and culture for your area, reflecting our charity’s ethos and strategic plan.

In practical terms, this means you will:

  • Ensure your area meets our strategic business requirements, budgets are managed effectively, and financial procedures are maintained
  • Provide strategic and direct line management to service managers within your area
  • Keep service standards high, drive continuous improvement and act on service feedback
  • Lead on staff relations, including team management and development, and reduce and help resolve any employee relations issues
  • Meet all legal requirements in your area and keep individuals safe.

What qualifications or experience does an area manager need?

You will have strong leadership skills and be capable of providing a clear vision and strategies for your area, which align with our values.

Team management abilities, including recruitment and development, must be a key part of your skill set.

We need you to be a good problem-solver, decision-maker and communicator who can build positive relationships in and outside the charity.

Finally, you should be able to manage resources against changing priorities and develop workable plans, including staff deployment, to deliver our aims within given timelines.

What might I move on to do next?

The area manager role is the top of the tree in terms of the management of our services. The role reports into regional managers and directors, and there are occasionally vacancies at this level to move onto.

There are also regular opportunities to use your skills and experience to drive forward national-level projects, such as in delivering new digital systems, training, practice or business development.
