For Liz, working for United Response has been the most valuable experience in her career so far. Having previously worked in the NHS and for other care providers, she found that United Response truly lives up to its name by being a community and person-centred organisation.

The focus on coaching and mentoring rather than traditional management practices has made her feel valued and supported. The team culture is one of family, where nurturing and development are encouraged, and everyone is approachable.

The importance of person-centred support

Person-centred support is at the heart of United Response’s approach, and this is something that Liz values deeply.

Rather than being driven by targets and tasks, the focus is on supporting people with disabilities to achieve their own goals, aspirations and dreams. This is achieved by actively listening, showing empathy, and joining in with activities alongside the people we support.

Making a real difference in people’s lives

For Liz, the highlight of her job is actively supporting people with disabilities to live fulfilling lives. She speaks of the excitement she feels when someone achieves their goals, such as moving into their own flat and becoming more independent.

Liz’s passion for her job is reflected in the small differences she makes in people’s lives, which can have a huge impact.

“It’s not just baked beans and tins of tomatoes, it’s changing people’s lives through new experiences, independence and confidence.”

Coming together and making new connections

After COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, it was noticed that many people were feeling lonely and missed being part of a community. Liz and her team responded to this by creating a safe space where individuals could come together, make friends and try new things.

The ‘drop-in centre’ has grown from five people to include people from all over Nottingham!

The centre provides opportunities for people to participate in healthy eating discussions, art projects, and even DJ coaching!

Climbing the career ladder: opportunities to progress

At United Response, development opportunities are encouraged, and Liz is proud of the career progression of one of her team members, Claire.

Having started as a support worker, Claire is now a Team Manager, and Liz is pleased to have been able to provide support and guidance to help her achieve her career goals.

Claire values the support she has received from United Response, which she says enables her to:

“think outside the box and make things happen for the people we support.”

Can you help us make a difference?
